      On Thursday, May 29, 2008, Liz Guarino, who is a Wave columnist, received a Master of Library Science degree from Queens College of the City University of New York. Her MLS degree was awarded at a formal ceremony in a familiar setting, in the Rosenthal Library in the Queens College Graduate School of Library and Information Studies.

Local Lion Roars From Rockaway To Broadway
      He auditioned several times for the part since age seven and each time he was sent back home because he wasn't quite ready. But he stayed optimistic, considering they kept calling him back. Countless auditions later, the now 11-year-old Guy Barfield II is a Broadway star in Disney's "The Lion King" in which he plays Young Simba.

Falcon Chicks Debut At Marine Parkway Bridge
      Newborn Peregrine falcon chicks spent their first hours in a cozy nest, atop the south tower on the Queens side of the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge. For several years running, the same female falcon and her mate have nested and raised chicks at the seaside crossing.

Care During Emergencies Extended To Pets
      An evacuation plan for both owners and their pets during a disaster has now been created under the collaboration of the American Red Cross and United Animals Nations. Together, the two have formulated a plan that creates a shelter and care for pets when evacuation is inevitable.

      JASA Roy Reuther Senior Center took a guided tour of new American Art during the Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum on Tuesday, May 13. The seniors visited Central Park's Conservatory Garden, located at 105 Street and Fifth Avenue, afterwards.

     Tina Marie Faulhaber, formally of Rockaway, has graduated from Buffalo University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Faulhaber will pursue a master's degree in education at Hofstra University. She plans to teach high school chemistry.

Margaret Skellington Retires
     The Bishop MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home celebrated the retirement of Margaret Skellington, a 20 year employee of Episcopal Health Services. She began her career in 1989 as a medical biller in the Hempstead central office, later moving to Uniondale and then Bishop MacLean Nursing Home in Far Rockaway. Many family members, including her one-week-old granddaughter, attended the event. Shown is Skellington being toasted by her supervisor, Tom Aguirre.

Pheffer Honors Retirement of Captain Civelia
     Captain John Civelia of Howard Beach was presented with a proclamation and honored by Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer upon the occasion of his retirement from the New York State Unified Court System. He began his career with the New York State Supreme Court Officers Association in 1975; became treasurer of the association in 1981; became an executive officer of the union until 1998, when he became an instructor at the Court Officers Academy. PHC Angels On The Bay Receives Donation From P.S. 105 Penny Harvest
      The children in one of P.S. 105's first grade classes recently visited Peninsula Hospital Center's Angels on the Bay Pediatric Unit, bearing a Penny Harvest donation of $1,000! Even though these first grade children range from only five to six years old, their class collected more pennies than any other class in the school.

Possum Running Wild Through Rockaway Beach
     Police found themselves literally chasing after a three-foot-long possum running wild through the parking lot of NSA Supermarket on Wednesday morning around 11 a.m. Police finally snatched the rodent near CVS Pharmacy and locked it in a cage, but not before sending people running through the parking lot in fear that the possum would attack and bite them.

The two hospitals, like many in the survey, were not graded in every category because they didn't have a sufficient number of cases to conduct an accurate grade for the hospital.
