'Whalemina'

Marks The Official Start of Rockaway Summer

The Department of Parks and Recreation officially kicked off the summer beach season last Friday in ceremonious fashion on the Beach 95 Street boardwalk.

After appearances from guest speakers Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer and Community Board 14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska, Parks Commissioner Adriene Benepe officially opened the beach for summer 2008.

That annual beach opening event known as "Whalemina,"named in honor of the recently restored gigantic mosaic whale of the same name that sits on the grass in front of the Boardwalk on Beach 95 Street, marks the start of Rockaway's summer season.

Several students from P.S. 183 were on hand to provide the pledge of allegiance and the marching band of Beach Channel High School provided the music for the crowd of spectators.
