Local Custodian Develops Dynamite Beach Umbrella

Eric Doreste is the custodian at Far Rockaway High School and often spends lots of time on the beach. One day, he got tired of chasing his beach umbrella around every time there was a wind gust. "I figured there had to be a better way to secure an umbrella in the sand," he told The Wave recently. "I tossed the problem around in my mind and came up with an umbrella that uses its own handle as a hammer to drive the end of the pole into the sand. He got two patents for his invention, and now, "The Sandblaster" is sold throughout the nation, and even at COSTCO, where it is called the "Groundbreaker." Pictured, Doreste with his invention.
