Abandoned Boats Threaten Bay's Health

Rangers and staff of the Gateway National Recreation Area are currently conducting "Operation Clean Bay," an effort that focuses on stopping illegal dumping and the practice of abandoning boats in Jamaica Bay. Although the threat posed by dumping garbage and waste materials is obvious, many people don't realize that abandoned boats also pose a significant environmental threat to Jamaica Bay. Since deliberately abandoned boats violate New York City, New York State and Federal law, the ownership of abandoned boats is investigated and violators are subject to significant penalties.

Operation Clean Bay is a joint effort by the National Park Service, the New York State DEC, the United States Coast Guard, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the New York City Police Department.

The public is encouraged to join this effort by providing the location and other information about derelict boats in Jamaica Bay. Information is also available on the appropriate way to dispose of old boats. For information or to report abandoned boats, call 718-338-3718.
