The Old Courthouse, Water Bills, Politicians And Taxpayers' Money

Dear Editor,

This past Sunday there was a story in the Daily News regarding the old court house in Rockaway Beach. As usual the plans for this wonderful old building had fallen through. The plans for the old structure becoming a CUNY mini campus were being scrapped. There was no surprise there, but news that Queens Borough President Helen Marshall's plan to now make it into a library was a little shocking.

We need a new library on our peninsula about as much as a new bank. President Marshall went on to say that she had $10 million dollars in the building that could have fixed it. So just to get this straight we can't get a few million to upgrade a pool in the Y but we can throw away $10 million for nothing in return. With that said, how about we get President Marshall to find a few more millions, scrap the library idea as we have three (one in Broad Channel going through renovations as we speak) already. We then use this money to build a state-of-the-art swimming pool in the old courthouse. I'm sure it is a very viable plan. There are numerous youth teams and High School programs that are in desperate need of swimming facilities. When are we all going to stop letting our politicians throw away our tax money on projects that never come to fruition. I know some of the courthouse neighbors might not like this idea, but remember you were going to allow a college to be built there. This would mean a lot less traffic. Think about it!

A few more things to consider, it is time to bombard your politicians and let them know you are refusing any new raises to your water bills. Araise of 25 percent over two years is absurd. The money is not all being used for our water and sewage; it is being used by Mayor Bloomberg in other areas. Did you know that not everyone pays a water bill? There are thousands of homeowners who have never paid a water bill. So instead of hammering those that do, let's find those those don't. I'm sorry if they catch up with you but it is getting a little expensive to keep carrying you. You all know who you are. Plus I believe you're only responsible for two years of back bills.

Does Senator Clinton get fired when she tries to come back to work after losing the presidential nomination? Where else could you skip work for over a year with pay, to try and upgrade your situation? When are we going to make all politicians who are going to campaign for a higher office vacate their current one? We are paying them to go out and campaign while neglecting their current office. That borders on the criminal.

Last but certainly not least, let's do one of two things. One, we abolish the City Council. This would free up millions and millions of misused funds. While there are some good solid council people, Councilman Addabbo surely one of them, the majority of them have their own agendas. It seems that taking care of ones family financially is the number one agenda. I'm sorry I didn't pursue running got the Council, I could have made my siblings very happy (only kidding).

The second thing is if we don't abolish the council then let's do away with matching campaign funds. This is truly a waste of the taxpayers' money. If you want to run for office then go out and get your own cash, period.

The buck has to stop somewhere or Bloomberg will turn our city into Mike Bloomberg's city only of the rich and famous.

PALMER DOYLE
