New Ferry Service

Dear Editor,

Congratulations on getting funding for the Rockaway - BAT ferry service. I have taken the Bay Ridge/Sunset Park ferry, when it has been available, since 1986. Of all the ferry companies who have provided this service TWFM Ferry has been the best. Manhattan Express, Direct Lines, TNT Hydro- Lines, Express Navigation and Sea Streak never delivered the reliable service that TWFM has provided at a consistently professional level. Any time the other providers had equipment problems with their Jersey boats they cancelled Brook- lyn service to put the boat on their New Jersey run.

Please remember that running the ferry doesn't mean much if the schedule doesn't attract riders. Without the 5:30 p.m. stop, many BAT passengers would not be able to use the ferry.

Since other forms of commuting into Manhattan are subsidized (buses, rail and subway), subsidizing ferries is a good use of taxpayers' money. People who work in Manhattan would be more open to taking a ferry if they knew that the ferry would be there to get them to work next year, four or five years from now or maybe like the subway for as long as they work in Manhattan. New York commuters will be well served by a safe reliable ferry service.
