SJEH Takes The Lead In Patient Care

The Patient Care Services Department, formerly known as the Nursing Department, has been in the forefront of recent hospital initiatives in care. The nursing staff initiated patient rounding, which helps reduce the use of nursing call bells and falls in the hospital, and helps bring nurses back to the patients' bedside. Pictured is Nurse Josette Condez of the CCU at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, as she raises the head of the patient bed 30 degrees, a recommended height for the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

The interdisciplinary Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) Prevention Program was coordinated by the Hospital Association of New York State. The VAP initiative helps to rapidly identify patients at risk. The VAP interdisciplinary team at St. John's Episcopal Hospital includes (from left to right) Sharon Behar, RN, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs; Marc Tarras, MD Pulmonary Medicine; Kathy Larosch, RN, CCU Nurse Manager; Nancy Traver, infection control practioner; and Maddy Cohen, senior respiratory therapist.
