2008 Beach Volleyball League Season Is Here!

By Joe McGivney

On Wednesday night, May 21 will mark the beginning of the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League's 18th season. The addition of seven new teams this year brings the grand total of squads to 56. The new rosters are filled with long-time Rockaway neighbors and friends and we are thrilled to welcome them to the RBVL family. Say hello to the Bayview, JG Electric, Bar 13 NYC, Breakaways, Average Joe's, Rockaway Breakers and Le Greann.

We also welcome back our 2007 rookies who are now seasoned veterans: the Bay House Babes, the Wharf Rats, the Coral Reefers, bhyc.com, the Lobster House and the Coral Reefers.

Of course, by seasoned veterans, we don't mean they're volleyball pros. We just mean they know what time to show up and where to go for a cocktail after the matches.

We also welcome some new sponsors like Open and Shut, Atlantic Service, the Blackwater and Sand Bar Contractors.

This third consecutive year of expansion comes with continued fear and trepidation. It means we need even more equipment, referees and beach space, all of which are tough to come by. We will continue to ask for more help from you to make this all work smoothly. With a few more bodies lending a hand each week, we should be OK.

The benefits of adding many of our local comrades to the fold should make it well worth the effort. More teams means we had to spend more time tracking some folks down for their rosters, uniform orders and money.

Therefore, we are pressing deadlines to get everything ready for opening day. Please be patient and understanding the first week or two of the season. Remember, this is being done to incorporate more of our friends and neighbors into the RBVL.

This Wednesday night (May 21) is actually a practice night at the beach and the games will not count toward the final standings.

Come out and shake off the cobwebs, stretch your groin muscles (and quads if you are an A-Rod fan) and practice your 12 oz. curls.

New teams (and anyone else who needs a refresher course) will be shown how to set up the net systems that we use. Dress warm and pray for "No Rain!"

After we finish playing ball we will head over to the Blackwater for the first party of the season. Rain or shine, the party is on! Additionally, uniforms and schedules will be given out at the bar at that time.

If you have any outstanding administrative items to take care of, do so at the Blackwater. Let's give one of our new sponsors a warm welcome to the RBVL family.

Once again we will have 6 divisions with varying levels of skill. Last year's final results were blended with roster additions and subtractions to produce groupings which we hope will be as competitive as ever. The 2008 divisional breakdown is listed below.

Wednesday, May 28 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 9. Next week, the full bar schedule for the season will be published in our weekly Wave article. Clear some time and drop in on all your favorite Rockaway haunts. Also, don't forget to check our website at www.rbvl.com. While you're waiting for the 2008 action to begin, you can look back at photos and stories from the past few seasons.

It will only be five days before we meet on the beach. If you have any questions before then please call Patty Moule at 917-613-0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.). Let the games begin!

See you on the beach on May 21.
