A Comment About The Rockaway Ferry
I am a relative newcomer to the Rockaways, I moved here in the summer of 2006. I do not own a car and am dependent on public transportation. Although I love the neighborhood, I am appalled at the state of public transportation here on the western end of the peninsula (I live in Rockaway Park and work on Wall Street.) Buses seem to run when they want to rather than to published schedules. Subways are infrequent and packed to the rafters. Consequently I have been looking forward to the inception of the Rockaway Ferry since I first heard of its possible creation last year. I was thrilled when I heard it had become a reality and looked forward to using it as a regular commuting route. But wait - I can't! The schedule makes it impossible for me to commute that way. 5:45 a.m. is way too early, and 7:45 a.m. is a little too late. I note the return trip, originally scheduled for 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., has been moved to 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. This is a bit of an improvement; 5:30 is quite reasonable for those of us who need to walk a few blocks. But 3:30, why bother? What genius thought this up? My prediction: six months from now the service will be cancelled due to lack of ridership, solely because the ridiculous schedule makes it impractical for most working people.
