Class: Basic Bird Watching. Instructor: Denis Macrae "Birdman"
Dates and Times: Saturdays, 10 a.m.- 12 p.m., May 17 and 24; June 7, 14, and 21 (No class on Memorial Day Weekend). Location: May classes - sTudio 6 Gallery, Fort Tilden.
June classes - Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor's Center.
This workshop is well timed with the spring migration. Each week, Macrae will lead participants on a walk - in Fort Tilden: the Bay and Ocean Walks; and in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: the East and West Pond Walks. Using binoculars and field guides, birds sighted will be identified. Time will be allotted during the second half of each class for participants to create watercolor pencil drawings of the birds they have spotted. Before each walk the class will target birds by consulting The Birds of Fort Tilden Checklist, and information can be obtained from local birdwatchers. The general objective is to enhance awareness of birds and their relationship to nature. In the process, participants get exercise and lower their blood pressure while enjoying the camaraderie of nature lovers. The class will also build the artistic skills of each person, and artwork will be shared with fellow class members, in a supportive atmosphere. The last session of the course will be held at Macrae's sunset bird house, a short walk from the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Preserve. There, participants can share the artwork they created throughout the course and enjoy refreshments.
Class: Raw Foods "Un-Cooking" Class. Instructor: Arianna Rose. Dates and times: Wednesdays, 7 p.m.- 9 p.m., June 4, 11, 18 and 25.
Location: TBA - either sTudio 6 Gallery or Building T-149 in Fort Tilden.
Participants will learn the simplicity of preparing delicious, healthy, living, vibrant foods and how to incorporate this into their daily lifestyles. In this comprehensive series students will learn what are raw and living foods, in the four categories: vegetable/fruits/ nuts/seeds and their importance in our daily diet. Each week participants will take part in making either simple dishes, smoothies and blended juices, main dishes or desserts.
Students will leave class with food to take home and will have acquired the knowledge to continue creating raw food dishes on their own. In addition, the instructor will: show students how to use some of the standard 'raw kitchen' equipment; introduce the class to "Rockaway Raw" potlucks; discuss classes and community-building activities; and provide handouts with more information on a raw diet, websites and cookbooks. The series will culminate with the class cooking and sitting down to a meal together. An RAA fundraising art auction is planned to run during "Good and Plenty." The auction is a separate event and is open to the membership. Anyone interested may submit up to two pieces. For details contact the RAA office. RAA CONTACT INFO:
