The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

We have free will to make choices over many things in our lives all the time. So much of life is really out of our personal control, but then we make choices freely everyday. When life becomes tough, it sometimes seems that everything is out of control including ourselves or our focus. It is difficult to keep putting that one foot in front of the other. We need to be open at those moments, be adaptable to what events may occur or what we need, and to remember that we have the power to choose faith.

It is a choice to align ourselves with God or the Universe. Many people beg, bargain or negotiate with the creative forces that control our destinies, but that is to bend the Universe to our particular scripts of how life should be. We all wish this was possible all the time. We can also live by deciding that we want to be part of the big picture of life on Earth in which we are only a tiny part. We have to trust in this divine picture and then in ourselves being able to use our instincts to recognize our places and our decisions.

I can willingly believe that the large puzzle of which I am one puzzle piece has my best interests in helping me learn what is important to my spirit. Then in trusting my ability to do my part, I can freely give up worrying about everything unknown to me in the future. I can live doing my best in the present, and then when things change or do not go the way I wanted them to, I can wait and see. I can know that I can handle what will come my way even if it is unexpected. When we are hurting, is when we make these choices. We can know that there is something more to see or learn in the particular situation. When it is incredibly hard, is when these factors of faith, openness and flexibility are most helpful.

We know that we cannot control God or the Universe. But in knowing that there is a divine order to creation of life, or that we have assistance that assures that we can choose to live harmoniously with necessary decisions, life can be much less controlled by fear and more by trust and openness.
