Historical Views of the Rockaways

The Rockaways' Time Capsule… To Be Opened in 2086 AD
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev,Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

Two decades ago the residents of the Rockaways participated in the burial of a community time capsule to be opened in the year 2086. Placed in the capsule were greetings to the future residents of the Peninsula, a few personal messages to future family members, letters and papers to future politicians, and historical records and newspapers which note the 1986 New York Mets World Series win over the Boston Red Sox from Beantown.

The parks department provided an open trailer to seat speechmakers and dignitaries, and the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home supplied the self sealing masonry outer shell to keep items dry and safe.

Ceremonies were held behind the doughboy monument, at Memorial Plaza on Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 94 and 95 Streets. At the conclusion of the festivities, O'Connor's employees closed, sealed, and buried the coffin shell of waterproof masonry beside the doughboy monument.

The Peninsula library administration took the responsibility of being the keeper of the site and the capsule, as the library is right next door.

Today's view is of the capsule as it was being filled with items for future residents to ponder. Only eighty years to go!
