Show Us Leadership

Dear Editor,

The April 18 issue of The Wave showed a picture of Senator Malcolm Smith and Roger Toussaint, President of Local 100 of the Transport Workers Union. The union was advocating for better healthcare and improved retirement benefits.

Isn't this the same union that only a little over two years ago, under the leadership of Toussaint, went on an illegal strike that crippled the city and cost millions of dollars at Christmas time?

There was nothing in the release about the cost to taxpayers nor have I heard an apology from Toussaint or the union to the citizens and taxpayers of this city for their illegal job action.

Before Senator Smith entertains any notion of having taxpayers pay for these requests, I wish he would show real leadership and demand that the union will never strike again.

I know it is an election year and politicians can't say "no" to almost any request nor say no to a photo opt, but I urge the Senator to show us the leadership that is desperately needed, but sorely lacking, in this city and state.

THOMAS M. LONG
