Free Swimming Lessons To Be Offered

Free swimming lessons will be offered for children and young adults at Far Rockaway High School, under a new program sponsored by Councilman James Sanders Jr. and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

The Learn to Swim program will begin on Saturday, May 10, in the high school, located at 821 Bay 25 Street. The lessons will be offered every Saturday until June 28, except May 24. Participants must be between the ages of 6 and 21 years old.

There will be five 45-minute classes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., with 20 students per class. The students will be divided into two groups; 6-14 yearolds in the first group and 15-21 yearolds in the second group.

"It never made any sense that young people should live on a peninsula surrounded by water and yet they cannot swim," Sanders said.

Parents who wish to sign their children up for the program must fill out a consent form and register through the councilman's office.
