Tight Peninsula Cup Soccer Battles Rage On
One of the most entertaining games was the battle between Girls 6-8 Celtic and Manchester United. The game featured a matchup of sisters. Manchester raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead behind the Trusttum girls; Daisy (2 goals) and Summer (1 goal).
The Lind sisters, Courtney and Casey, protected Celtic's goal the rest of the way as Jessie Boland, Casey Lind and Kelly Casey scored to tie the game at 3. Annie Ryan just missed a gamewinning goal for Manchester United.
Another Girls 6-8 contest was a real battle of attrition as AC Milan defeated Real Madrid 2-1. All of the scoring came in the second half of this mostly defensive game that saw both goalies stop all scoring chances in the first half.
After AC Milan took a 1-0 lead on a beautiful play-making goal by Therese Boyle, Real Madrid came right back one minute later on another spectacular goal by Kristin Corral.
However, with no substitutions in the game, it became a test to see who tired first. When Boyle scored again with just over five minutes to play, AC Milan took the lead for good with both defenses dominating the rest of the way. Therese's older sister, Erin, had a standout game on defense.
In the youngest division, four onegoal games highlighted the action.
FC Barcelona again notched a pair of 1-0 wins. In a hard fought battle at midfield, Barcelona and Celtic ended the first half in a nil to nil tie. Solid plays by Katie Marquardt, Isabella Grillo and Rose Fay kept the game at bay.
The second half started the same but a solid pass from Carly McCann to Meghan McGinn down the right wing caught the Celtic team off guard at midfield. McGinn was able to get the ball to the middle of the field to Isabella Grillo, who split the defense with a solid pass to Lindsay DeBoer as she blasted home the only goal.
Tremendous defense by Meghan Gigliello and Nora Young helped keep Celtic from tying the game. The saving grace for Team Barcelona was Keira Walsh in goal, as she stopped a total of 14 shots. Barcelona also edged Chelsea FC by a score of 1-0. The first half was a back and forth battle with a total of 14 shots for Barcelona and 11 shots for Chelsea with none slipping by either goalie.
In the second half, Maria Di Carlo was able to slip one past the outstanding goaltending of Chelsea. Atotal of 26 shots for Barcelona and 19 shots for Chelsea made it a great game to watch.
AC Milan also won a tight pair. Milan and Manchester United battled it out right down to the final minutes when Milan was able to pull it out in the final minutes of the game, winning 2-1. Molly Breslin scored the first goal off a beautiful pass from teammate and twin, Bridget Breslin to put Milan ahead 1-0. Manchester United put itself right back into the game when they put one in before the half with a tie score 1-1.
The second half was back and forth with both teams unable to convert on scoring opportunities. Milan continued the pressure behind the strong play of Emily Lind, Makayla Beehler and Megan Duffy. Molly Breslin once again worked her magic to put Milan ahead 2-1 with key assistance from Emily Fuerks. Kerrianne Blum and Caroline Kelly were excellent in goal.
Against Real Madrid, Makayla Beehler did a phenomenal job in goal as both teams went into the half tied at 0-0. The second half, the teams went back and forth with Milan making it on the board first with Molly Breslin capitalizing on a beautiful pass from Emily Fuerks. Real Madrid retaliated quickly, sneaking one past Megan Duffy. Then Molly Breslin continued her scoring run, putting one in after a key assist by Katie Sammon and again cap- italizing on a pass from Kaitlin Neiswenter. Nicole Gibson was able to put one on the board for Real Madrid but they just ran out of time and AC Milan was able to take the win 3-2.
The AC Milan team in Girls 4-5 also had a good week. First they rallied to tie Real Madrid on a goal by Julianna De Silvia as time expired. Great play by Lauren Guidarelli and Meaghan LaSorsa lead a team effort for the tie.
Caroline Good had given Madrid the lead and Kelly Davan was spectacular keeping Milan off the board until the final second. Milan won a rematch on Friday with guest player Emma Knox scoring the only goal. Taylor Vegh played
tough as striker, Allie McGuire, played a strong defensive game and Annie Dengler played a great game in goal.
On the boys' side, Manchester battled Milan to a 1-1 tie in the 6-8 division. Manchester got its goal from Brian Ostrander and great goal work by Aidan Morgan. In 4-5 action, Milan topped Manchester 3-2. Jonathan Machado from Manchester scored both goals. Timothy Connolly, Kyle Hoffman and Dominic Savino scored. There were great offensive plays by James Carlton and David Hanrahan. The team of Ryan Duffy and Ryan Dougherty kept the Milan defense strong.
