Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Final Pre-Season Meeting Scheduled

By Joe McGivney

In preparation for the volleyball season, a critical date is fast approaching. The final RBVL pre-season meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m. at the Kerry Hills Pub.

Captains are required to bring the balance of their league fee and their uniform orders. Rosters should be submitted as well.

If a captain is unable to attend, he must send a representative (and the money) in his place. The forms are available on our website at www.rbvl. com.

All but a handful of last year's squads have paid deposits to ensure their place for 2008. Additionally, several new teams have been placed on a waiting list to fill any unclaimed spots.

Early projections call for 6 different divisions with varying levels of skill. Look for 2007 champs, Freedhand's, Flip-Cup All-Stars, Federation, Wharf Rats, Blarney Castle and Team Margarita to come back and defend their titles with runners-up, Sugar Bowl, Coppersmith's, Bay House Babes, Sand Spikers, The Wave and A Night Out nipping at their heels.

Prospective new referees are welcome to come to the meeting if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

Remember that Wednesday, May 21 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year.

Wednesday, May 28 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 9. On Saturday, August 9, the league championships will be played - keep your schedules clear. Every year it's a blast! Finally, it's never too early to save the date for the RBVL Awards Dinner, which will be held on Friday, September 12.

It will only be a short few weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule on her new cell phone number, 917-613-0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.).

See you on April 30.
