In Quarters

By Chris 'Bubba' Kalisak Firefighter/EMT: Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department

CHRIS KALISAK CHRIS KALISAK Once again the weather is getting nice, flowers are blooming and summer is around the corner. This means swimmers, boaters, jetskis and water rescues for the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance rescue. This year our response to water emergencies will be a little faster thanks to the newest addition to the BCVFD. We recently received a 21-foot center console, twin 90 turbo outboard motorboat with trailer from an army base in Virginia. The boat is used, but runs great, and it was FREE! It does need a little work, however. If anyone who knows about boats would like to donate time or supplies such as paint, vests, even a marine radio, please call us at 718-474-6888.

The BCVFD is also going around delivering flyers for our annual Fund Drive this year. We would like to thank all those who sponsored the full-color pamphlet that will be delivered by our members soon! This is probably one of the most important fundraisers that we do in Broad Channel. The money we raise from the Fund Drive goes towards the running bills, insurance costs for the rigs, and our daily operating expenses. The money does not go towards our new building fund! Speaking of the new building, June,17 2008 is a date to keep open! This day we will hold a community meeting about the plans for the new firehouse. We just passed our first stage in the building of the new firehouse last week. The ball is slowly rolling downhill, but at least it's rolling! The members of the BCVFD will also be out on the weekends and some weekdays, depending on the weather, to collect for the Can Drive! We know a lot of residents give to the BCVFD and we appreciate it.

The Can Drive is done for two reasons. One is to raise money to buy new equipment and gear for the BCVFD. The other reason we Can Drive is to receive donations from people who pass through our community who are sometimes rescued and brought to the hospitals by the BCVFD. I admit some of you who pass through Broad Channel don't even know about us, but you can! Visit our website for more information at www.broadchannelvfd. org or call us at 718-474-6888. If you are passing through and have an emergency, call 718-474-8888, or if you want to just come visit us we are at 15 Noel Road off of Cross Bay Boulevard.

The BCVFD is always looking for new members to join, or if you can give time helping us do a fundraiser please contact us! Many of our members who have been here a long time have gotten their careers started by being a BCVFD member. Some members have become FDNY firefighter, EMTs, and like me, an FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatcher! We take pride in what we do every day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week! We also like to have a good time, like when we attend parades or when we go to fire school to train. Well, until next time be safe!
