Assault At B. 84 Street Playground Leaves Several Injured
Five white children were injured on April 14 when they were attacked by a gang of 15 to 20 minority teens at the Shore Front Parkway playground where they were sitting on the swings, parents say.
Police officials corroborated the attack to The Wave and added that they are looking for several teens in connection with the attack.
Nicole Gillespie, whose 11-year-old daughter was a victim of the attack, said that the children were playing on the swings, located at Shore Front Parkway and Beach 84 Street at about 4:45 on Monday, when the gang, made up of teens from 13 to 15-years-of-age, according to Gillespie, came into the Park's Department facility.
Gillespie says that her daughter told her that one of the teens said, "Let's get the ugly white one," and then punched one of the white girls.
"They tried to take their cell phones and their money," Gillespie said. "One of the boys in the park tried to stand up to the teens, and they punched him in the face so hard, they knocked some of his teeth out of his mouth."
Sources say that one of the white youth managed to call home and the police responded.
Gillespie, who lives nearby, got to the park when the police arrived.
"The police looked upset to me with the situation," she said. "That upsets me. If it had been the other way around [if the attackers had been white and the victims, black] there would have been riots."
Police say they searched for the attackers, but that they scattered and ran when the police arrived.
Official sources say that none of the white children was badly injured, suffering only cuts and lacerations.
Detectives and youth officers from the 100 Precinct are investigating, but no arrests have been made.
