Religions Speak Out For Peace,Harmony And Love
News Events/Travel Editor/Host • WNYX - TV Morning News • 12:00 noon on UHF Chs. 35 & 26 Monday - Friday

Pope Benedict is in our midst this week and will be visiting several nondenominational churches to promote peace and harmony among all religious sects. The message to all is, love one another. And, in America, we are free to love anyone regardless of his or her religion. Last week I was so inspired by (Buddhist) Shinnyo-en Awards dinner at Cipriani's for their "Pathfinder's for Peace." As a pebble is tossed into the water it, ripples and extends beyond. So too, is a smile, a cheery, "Hello," and a little kindness each day reverberates back to us and continues to create harmony and peace in the world. We should teach our children by our own example or by advising them to perform these simple acts of kindness to make ripples that rebound in happiness, harmony and peace. Award winners were: Morgan Freeman, actor/ director/founder of "Planet Now"; Mira Sorvino for Humanitarian Services; Brett Hickey of the TODAY Show, who was M/C; Bianca Ryan, who won "America's Got Talent," and American Ballroom Theatre Youth Dance Co., gave live performances. Beautiful evening.

The Christopher Awards was also an inspiring evening surrounded by the great minds of our times. Best Adult Books: Brother, I'm Dying by Edwidged Anticat; The Invisible Wall by Harry Bernstein; The Lonely Patient by How We Experience Illness. Cable TV: Flashpoint ( CBS) ; In God's Name , CBS ; Longford (HBO) ; Youngster Books: Preschool; How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?; Owen and Mzee. Special award to American Masters, and David McCullough took home the Life Achievement Award. The Christopher motto is: It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.
