RTC Hosts Performance Of Children's Chrous
Monday evening, March 31, parents and friends of the members of the Rockaway Theatre Company's Children's Choral class were treated to a performance of tunes from popular movies and Broadway shows. The concert was the culmination of a ten week workshop course offered by the RTC to local youngsters at a nominal cost, thanks to partial subsidization by the N.Y.C. Department of Cultural Affairs.
Over the past ten weeks, Sophia Appel, Olivia Basil, Rebecca Boland, Reilly Charles, Shannon David, Laurie Klein, Michael Morley, Michael Newman, Catherine Muldoon, Samantha Prevot and Stephanie Zwirn participated in a weekly workshop in which they learned to sing in concert with others. They learned techniques of vocalization and projection as well as choral and solo singing, harmony and counterpoint under the guidance of experienced chorus teacher, Jodee Timpone.
The "invitation only" audience was highly entertained and impressed with the children's renditions of such snappy favorites as "Old Time Rock and Roll", "I Won't Grow Up", "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" and "Do Re Mi, among others. Audience members received questionnaires and pencils at the start of the recital, challenging them to identify the show or movie from which each of the songs performed was taken. There were no prizes awarded to the ones who got it right, but refreshments were provided for the children and their guests at the conclusion of the performance.
An RTC representative announced that there are plans to discontinue the ten week choral workshop. Instead, next season, the Saturday morning Children's Theatre Workshop will add a vocal component taught by Timpone. The Children's and Teen's Workshops will run on Saturdays beginning in September and culminating in February, 2009 when both classes will combine in the performance of a wellknown Broadway Musical. Interested parties should check this newspaper in August for Registration information.
