Bigger Better Bottle Bill

Dear Editor,

One way for Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to implement the people's ardent desire for cooperation between the legislature and our new governor is to leave the provisions of the Bigger Better Bottle Bill in the state budget. The time has come to add the nickel deposit to containers for water, iced tea, juice, and sports drinks. This strategy has important implications for the budget and for the environment. Unreturned container deposits would revert to the state, estimated to be $100,000,000 annually. Consumers would think twice before tossing their favorite beverage container on our beaches or streets and in our parks. In our annual New York Beach Cleanup, our volunteers find twice as many containers without the deposit as those with it. Let the cooperation begin!
