In Quarters

By Chris 'Bubba' Kalisak Firefighter/EMT: Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department

CHRIS KALISAK CHRIS KALISAK Hello again everyone. Yes, it's been a little while since we talked last, but I have been very busy, as you have seen in The Wave.

The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department once again marched in the Rockaway St. Patrick's Day Parade. They have also won the first place trophy for best fire department in the parade the past seven out of eight years.

This year the trophy was given to the BCVFD by Lew M. Simon, and the trophy is in memory of Theresa A. Mc- Cracken. The BCVFD was also given an award by the Cub Scout pack 531 in Brooklyn this month, for teaching the children and parents about fire safety. Cub Master and Firefighter George Aschoff and I were at the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of the BCVFD.

If anyone would like us to come to his or her school, organization or place of work to teach fire safety tips, please call us at 718-474-6888. You can also contact me at 646-358-9457 and leave a message; we will get back to you!

The community of Broad Channel has probably noticed that the Firehouse has gotten a face-lift recently. All the supplies, including wood and sheetrock, were donated to us by some past members and residents. We would like to first thank the owner of Stairworld for donating the new staircase. We would also like to thank Lew M. Simon for the new stove and refrigerator that he has donated. And we can't forget about the members who have done the work as well as donated time and money and, as always, had a good time while doing it!

The BCVFD is still looking for new members, both young and old! If you are a past member who can give us some of your spare time, please come back and fill out another application! If you are interested in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), then come down.

We need you, too!

The annual FUND DRIVE is right around the corner, so please help support the Vollies in your town! We are there for the community 24 hours a day! Remember we don't get a paycheck, we do it for pride and bragging rights!!

Till next month be safe and check the batteries in your smoke/CO detectors!
