Local Spells His Way To National Bee
      Eighth-grader Neil Alacha was still in shock when he walked into Bishop MacLean senior home on Beach 20 Street this Sunday for his weekly volunteer work. His picture was hanging on the wall and the congratulations were overwhelming, because just three days before on March 13, three times became a charm for Neil.

Advances In Hemodialysis At SJEH
     The Marjorie Basser Hemodialysis Center at St. John's Episcopal Hospital has made advances recently in patient services. The director of the Hemodialysis Center, Alicia Calderon, states that new developments in services include electronic medical records, anemia management and a vascular access program. Beach Channel HS Hosts Blood Drive
     Beach Channel High School held a blood drive on Wednesday, March 6, in which they collected a total of 74 pints of blood. Dennis Bourderau, Rashad Holder, Anthony Smith, Kadeem Stewart and Jonequa Young, all students in Mrs. Murray's leadership class, served on the blood drive committee.

      One hundred mobile vending carts will soon be dispersed throughout select neighborhoods along the peninsula and in Broad Channel, giving Rockaway the opportunity to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for years to come.

Chapey Re-elected To New York State Board Of Regents
     Dr. Geraldine D. Chapey has been re-elected to the 16- member panel of the New York State Regents. She is a professor at the City University of New York and is licensed by the New York City Board of Education as a high school principal, elementary school principal and is certified by the NYS Department of Education in school district administration and in several teaching areas. Chapey has authored several book and co-authored almost 100 published articles, research papers and pamphlets. Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Boardwalk Blaze
Teens Seen Running From Scene
     Firefighters from a number of local fire companies responded on Tuesday afternoon to a smoky fire on the boardwalk at Beach 59 Street. Police sources say that two teens were observed running from the scene just as bystanders called news of the growing fire to the 911 emergency system at 1:15 p.m., but cops were unable to corral the two. Firefighters arrived on the scene just minutes after the call and had to tear down a retaining wall to get to the fire. All photos by Howard Schwach

Convertible Flips Over At Cronston Triangle
     PHOTO BY ANGELA BERNSTEIN A convertible flipped over last Saturday night at Cronston Triangle, at Beach 142 Street in Belle Harbor, no major injuries were reported. Police rushed to the accident site and can be seen towing the wreck from the scene at around 10:40 p.m.

Elephant Walk A Harbinger Of Circus
     The elephants walked through the Queens Midtown Tunnel once again on Tuesday night, a sure sign that the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus is back in town. The big top show opened at Madison Square Garden on March 20 and will run through April 6. Pictured, an NYPD Lieutenant joins the show's ringmaster for the walk from the railroad junction to the Garden.

File Tax Returns For Economic Stimulus Checks
      Queens Assemblymember Michele R. Titus would like to remind residents to file a 2007 federal income tax return, even if they are not normally required to do so, in order to qualify for the economic stimulus payment. The economic stimulus payment is part of a $150 billion plan to help strengthen the weak economy.

Sammy Is A Regular At Bayview Restaurant
     The Bayview Restaurant in Broad Channel has a new patron that prefers the outside. The harbor seal, which has made the restaurant boat dock into his own private lounge, has been named Sammy by the restaurant staff. The seal can be seen most days sunning on the boat dock.

     Up & Coming Politician Max Stiefeld-Ferrari marches with Senator Chuck Schumer in the St. Patrick's Day parade in Rochester, New York. Max is the grandson of Florence and Sheldon Stiefeld, formerly of Rockaway Beach and the great-nephew of Wave Publisher Susan Locke. Schumer was a student in Sheldon Stiefeld's social studies class at Madison High School in Brooklyn and is a role model for Max. Perhaps he will follow Schumer's lead into politics.

Burke Receives Christian Service Certificate
     Rockaway resident Richard Burke received a Christian Service Certificate in recognition of completing community service requirements for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Sucher Receives Dean's List Honors
      Peter I. Sucher of Belle Harbor was named to the dean's list at the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering at Binghamton University for the fall 2007 semester. Binghamton University is one of the four university centers of the State University of New York. It enrolls close to 14,500 students in programs leading to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

      Anita and Charlie McLoughlin of Breezy Point are proud to announce their family's newest additions. Isabelle Rose was born to Danny and Linda McLoughlin on Leap Year Day, February 29, at 2:44 p.m. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces. Her cousin, Owen Xavier was born to Brendan and Jane McLoughlin, at 4:24 p.m. He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

Broad Channel Library Being Renovated
      Queens Public Library at Broad Channel located at 16-26 Cross Bay Boulevard is closed for renovations. The branch will remain closed for approximately 10 weeks and is scheduled to reopen in June. During the renovation period, the Bookmobile will be onsite every Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to lend books, take returns and answer reference questions.

Where's The New Boardwalk?
      The protective gates went up in July. The work started last fall. Yet, the replacement of boards between Beach 20 and Beach 23 Streets on Far Rockaway's boardwalk is less than half finished with the beginning of the beach season just two and a half months away.

PHC Diabetic Research Showcased
     The results of a study conducted by Dipak Patel, D.O., a second year Family Practice resident at Peninsula Hospital Center, were translated into a research presentation poster that was entered into the American College of Osteopathic Family Practice annual research poster competition in Denver, Colorado. The study investigated the diabetic patients in Peninsula Hospital Center's diabetic program and found that these patients scored better than most diabetics at the national level, especially in blood sugar levels, blood pressure levels and cholesterol.       Live Nations presents the Grammy Award-winning group, The Pointer Sisters, on Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m. The Pointer Sisters are known for their hits, "I'm So Excited" and "Jump (For My Love)." The Pointer Sisters first started their music career as a duo, performing as "Pointers, a Pair." Soon after, sister Anita joined the group and they toured as a trio.

Rescuers Foil Far Rockaway Suicide Attempt
     A 23-year-old male threatened to take his own life on the afternoon of March 11 when he climbed to the roof of 1334 Caffrey Avenue, an apartment building in Far Rockaway. He could be seen hanging to the roof, just moments away from slipping to his death. Rescue workers rushed to the rooftop where they were able to pull the jumper back up to safety. The unidentified man was sent to St. John's Episcopal Hospital, where he received a psychiatric evaluation.

Robbed Bank,Fled By MTA Bus,Captured
      A Rockaway man was captured shortly after he robbed a Nassau County bank because he attempted to flee the scene on an MTA bus and was recognized from his description, County police officials say.

Volunteers Needed For Youth Council
      The 100 Precinct Community Council is urging Rockaway residents to volunteer their time on the newly formed Youth Council. The Council is asking for 10 to 12 volunteers who are at least 18 years old. Anyone interested in becoming part of the Youth Council should attend the next general meeting on March 26 at 7:30 p.m.

      The students at PS 256 located at PS 43 boarded the Discovering the Universe bus for a hands-on science experience, on Thursday, February 14. The American Museum of Natural History's Moveable Museum traveled to the school where science students in grades six through eight received 30 minute of classroom instruction from museum staff.

      Seniors in Shape held its 3rd Fitness for Life Expo for Total Mind and Body Health at Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field. Over 800 adults, 55-years-ofage or older, attended the event. They came from all parts of Brooklyn and Queens to find out the latest information on over 40 companies.
