Twenty years ago, Johnson (pictured middle with husband James Johnson) created a day car center/playgroup on Central Avenue called Ms. D's Playgroups. Moye, founder of the Jazzy Rockers and JMI Securities Basketball Tournament, says he presented the plaque to Johnson as recognition to her support of young children in the community. More ... The Rockaway Ravens will host a youth soccer program, which begins this spring and will conduct registration for their youth football and cheerleading program. The 8-week soccer program will start on Saturday, April 5 and conclude on May 31. There will be a boys and a girls' intramural program for ages 5 to 16 years old. There will be a travel team up to the age of 16. More ... Saint Rose of Lima paid special tribute to the school's basketball teams and cheerleaders in a recently held award ceremony. With the first hints of spring around the corner, Chris Horn knows this time period is the beginning of an activity which will take up a lot of his time. But it's been a happy and fruitful 10 years for Chris Horn. A teacher at Beach Channel High School, he devotes his after-school activities to coaching the only crew varsity team in the five boroughs. More ... In their finale to the season the New York Stars Mite Team participated out in the Long Island Hockey Association League King of The Hill tournament at Cantiague Park. Due to their phenomenal success this season, the Stars were moved to the "A" division to play against the elite seams that include the L.I. Gulls, L.I. Royals and the Westchester Express. More ... The Sorrentino Recreation Center has just begun hosting an exciting basketball tournament. The Sorrentino Recreation Center Three-on-Three Full Court Basketball Tournament began on March 13 and will continue every Thursday at 7:15 p.m. The regular season ends on Thursday, May 22. More ... The Archbishop Molloy girls' junior varsity basketball team defeated St. John Villa to win the CHSAA city championship on March 11. They also repeated as the Brooklyn/Queens diocesan champions a week prior in a victory over St. Francis Prep, 46-33. Co-captain Kathryn Edwards was one of the players who led Molloy to a 23-2 record this year with her fine point guard and leadership skills. Taylor Conroy, another local talent, also contributed to the team's success with her shooting and rebounding. Congratulations to the teams for their great season. More ... More ... Congratulations to the St. Thomas More Sub-Novice Basketball Team, which took first place in its division at the Peggy Boyle Tournament, which took place at St. Francis de Sales. The St. Camillus Rookie Boys basketball team started off their schedule of games with a March 13 matchup against Regina-N.I.A. in the Interparish League in Brooklyn. St. Camillus ended the first half with a six-point lead but struggled to contain Regina's high scorer in the second half, falling 44-40 in the end. More ... An accident that took place at Central Avenue and Beach 9 Street on Thursday afternoon would have been of little note, except for the fact that one of those involved was Breezy Point resident Brian McNamee, who has become infamous for his role in the sports performance-enhancing drug scandal. McNamee testified before a congressional committee that he had provided drugs such as human growth hormone and steroids to baseball icons such as Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. More ... |
