Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Prepares for 2008 Season
Preparations for the 2008 summer season of the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League are underway. Patty Moule will again lead her troops into battle and try to top last year's very successful campaign.
Each year the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not. Last year, 6 divisions of different playing (and imbibing) levels were fielded with a record-setting 50 teams. We will not expand this year and that total will remain the same for '08.
In preparation for the season, the first critical date is fast approaching. Team captains are required to attend our first meeting of the year at Kerry Hills Pub on Wednesday, April 2 at 8:00 p.m. Captains should bring a deposit of $100 per team to insure a spot in the league.
If a captain is unable to attend, he must send a representative in his place. Roster and uniform order forms for 2008 will be distributed to each team. If you are interested in fielding a new team, you should also come to the meeting and bring a $100 deposit (fully refundable), which will get you on the waiting list in case teams drop out and openings become available.
All players are welcome to come out of hibernation and join the festivities as well. Although we experienced a few growing pains, the general feedback on the 2007 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone's input and assistance. Feel free to attend the first meeting and to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement.
Prospective new referees are welcome to come by if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.
Captains can do us a big favor by emailing your vital information (name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from your team. If the information is the same as last year, don't do a thing.
However, if you have a new e-mail address or you've elected a new captain, send the info to jmcgivney2@nyc. rr.com as soon as possible; you don't have to wait for the meeting. We're looking to improve the speed and accuracy of our announcements and information dissemination. (Impressive, no?)
You can mark a few additional special dates on your calendars already. We will hold the second and final meeting before the season on Wednesday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m. at Kerry Hills. Rosters (signed or unsigned), uniform orders and payment in full is due at that time.
Wednesday, May 21 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all, and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Wednesday, May 28 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 9.
On Saturday, August 9, the league championships will be played - keep your schedules clear. Every year it's a blast! Finally, it's never too early to save the date for the RBVL Awards Dinner, which will be held on Friday, September 12
It will only be a couple of months before the "Desperate Housewives" and "Survivors" of Rockaway meet on the sands of Riis Park for yet another summer of fun. Opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand.
If you have any questions before the meeting, please call Patty Moule at 917-566-2809. (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.) See you on April 2.
