Thousands Cheer Rockaway St.Patrick's Day Parade
The annual Rockaway St. Patrick's Day parade drew thousands - some say up to 2,500 - this year, under chilly but clear skies. Not only was the number of attendees a possible record, but the number of marchers was, as well. The parade took nearly an hour and a half to pass one point on the parade route. Many politicians attended, including City Councilman Joseph Addabbo, Congressman Anthony Weiner, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and State Senator Malcolm Smith. The major missing pol was Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a traditional marcher. Although his office said that the Mayor never scheduled the parade on his calendar, many locals say that he was put off by the possibility of demonstrations against him because of his perceived snub of Rockaway concerning the YMCA money.
