Looking For 'Youth Court'Participants

Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer has announced that the Far Rockaway Youth Court is again looking for teen participants in their program.

The program is looking for teens, ages 14-18, who are interested in learning about law and serving their communities. While applicants must be enrolled in school, there are no academic requirements for membership.

"I have personally attended one of the courts, and they are very professional and a wonderful opportunity for youths to learn every aspect of the criminal justice system as lawyers, judges and public defenders," said Pheffer.

Accepted applicants participate in a 40-hour training program, in which they work directly with a diverse group of judges, lawyers and social workers. Teens who successfully complete the training serve on the court. Teens who serve on the Youth Court will receive a monthly stipend.

Interviews will take place in March. Positions are expected to fill quickly. Priority will be given to those who RSVP by phone.

Applicants must submit a completed application prior to the interview. To receive an application, teens can contact the Far Rockaway Youth Court at 718-474-2168.
