Mary Gallagher's final sprint to the finish line ensured sixth place medals for the Bishop Kearney High School indoor track two-mile relay team at the Mayor's Cup held at the Armory last weekend.

The Kearney quartet was led by team captain Tara Mullen (Belle Harbor) who ran the first half-mile leg against a very competitive field consisting of CHSAA and public school athletes. Mullen ran a smart and tactile race in positioning her team for medal contention.

Sophomore sensation Meghan (Hollywood) Hayes ran the fastest split on the team in a time of 2 minutes, 35 seconds for her half- mile effort. Hayes made a brazen move on her last lap by passing another runner around the tight turn, which helped her team get closer for the cherished Mayor's Cup medal.

Co-captain Elizabeth (Ridge Rocket) Monohan did her job by inching closer to the competitor. Monohan ran 2 minutes 49 seconds which was what the team needed to stay in contention.

Mary (the Rockaway Breeze) Gallagher grabbed the green baton from Monohan and was on a mission to capture the final medal in the competition. As Gallagher ran the last 50 meters, the crowd rose to their feet as she outleaned her competitor at the tape to win the medal and the Mayor's Cup t-shirt for all medal winners.
