Congressman Meeks Back Clinton In Presidential Primary

Congressman Gregory Meeks, who represents the eastern portion of the Rockaway peninsula in the House of Representatives, says that he is backing Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

In a prepared statement issued this week, Meeks said:

"In New York State there has been a 19 percent increase in foreclosures from just one year ago. That's not just a number - that's families falling behind, losing their homes, and losing the dream of shared prosperity we all hold. While people may feel invisible to the Bush Administration, I know firsthand that we are not invisible to Hillary Clinton - that's why I'm urging you to support her for President on February 5. "We've all seen the damage that the sub-prime housing crisis is doing to middle class and working families across the city and state. I've seen it first hand in my work in the House Committee on Financial Services and up close in my district representing Southeast Queens, Far Rockaway and Howard Beach.

"I'm supporting Hillary Clinton for President because she will stand up for the people who are invisible to this administration. Hillary has stood up to the administration and to Wall Street to demand that they begin to meet this crisis, calling for an aggressive stimulus package, a 90-day immediate moratorium on foreclosures and a freeze on adjustable rate mortgages.

"In New York City, we've seen Hillary's determination first hand, and we know that she has been standing up for us and middle class and working families since we helped elect her to the Senate. Hillary has proposed a longterm plan to create millions of highwage jobs, provide healthcare for everyone, lift up millions of children from poverty, and meet the significant challenges that we face.

"But the families that are being hurt by the current economic crisis cannot wait until January 20, 2009, and Hillary knows they need a new direction on the economy now. That is why she has called on the Bush Administration and Congress to enact an immediate $110 billon economic stimulus plan to help families that have been hard hit by the economic downturn and to give our economy a needed boost. Her plan would not only immediately begin to save homes from foreclosure, but will also provide $25 billion in emergency energy assistance, an average of $650 in immediate assistance to 2.4 million New York working families whose yearly heating bills have increased over $2,000 since 2000.

"Hillary's immediate plan will also call for an investment of $10 billion to expand unemployment insurance for workers who have lost their jobs. This insurance will help keep their families above water and help workers reenter the labor market. To help ensure that new jobs are being created, Hillary would also accelerate $5 billion in energy efficiency and alternative energy investments to start expanding "green collar job" growth. These investments will expand the market for a number of green industries, creating good, high paying jobs that cannot be exported.

"Finally, Hillary has asked Congress to provide an additional $40 billion in direct tax-rebates to working and middle class families to help jumpstart the economy again.

"Before I decided who to support for President, I asked myself, "Who is going to be the best President at solving our problems?" I know the answer is Hillary. We're facing some significant challenges right now and we need a President with the strength and experience to meet them on Day 1. I trust Hillary to deliver the change we need. Please join me and vote for Hillary in the New York presidential primary on February 5."
