Doo Wop Spectacular Is Back

By Kizzy Thompson

Kenny Vance & the Planotones Kenny Vance & the Planotones Harry G's 15th annual "Doo Wop" Spectacular kicks off with what promises to be a full lineup of doo wop greats. The annual concert, which will take place on Saturday, January 26 at Beach Channel High School, starts at 7 p.m. Tickets can be reserved or purchased at the door.

The Doo Wop Spectacular is a multiple act show, which this year includes such favorites as Kenny Vance and the Planotones, Cleveland Still and the Dubs, Lenny Cocco and the Chimes, Joey and the Paradons, the Demensions, Quotations, Twin Gold, N.Y.'s Cascades, Sountrac, and the special attraction, Vito Balsamo's reunion with Vito and The Salutations.

The show is produced and hosted by Harry Gross, aka Harry G., New York's "Duke of Doo Wop." A retired communications and arts teacher, Harry Gross was one of the last original Beach Channel High School staff members, working at the school from 1973 to 2003.

He says that he created the show not only out of his love for the musical genre, but also to establish a concert that raises funds in memory of his sister, Susan, who died at the age of 7 from leukemia.

Lenny Cocco & the Chimes Lenny Cocco & the Chimes The Susan G. Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a scholarship to a student pursuing a career in the music and entertainment fields.

"I tried to create an event that would draw people here to the Rockaways, and to a beautiful school and stage that doesn't see much action," said Gross. "I wanted a professional show for the Rockaways, and we are fortunate that it continues year after year."

Gross, who will emcee the event, expects a house packed with concertgoers. Partial proceeds to benefit the Susan G. Memorial Scholarship Fund.
