SFDS CYO Basketball Teams Pick Up Winning Ways

The CYO Basketball season resumed this past weekend and the St. Francis de Sales teams picked up where they left off.

The Girls Pee Wee Gold had a busy weekend. First up was a win over St. Rose as Caroline Collins, Kaitlin Courtney and Caitlin Drury all shined on the court for SFDS.

In the consolation game of the St. Adalbert Tournament, Jackie and Therese Gallagher made back-to-back baskets to give St. Francis a 12-10 win over Gate of Heaven. Shannon Rochelle added 4 points and Lauren Guidarelli scored 2 points. Therese Gallagher was selected to the all-tournament team.

On Sunday, the SFDS Pee Wee Gold team lost a heartbreaker to Our Lady of Hope, 17-16, despite 9 points from Therese Gallagher and 4 points from Lauren Guidarelli. Jenna McCann blocked numerous shots and grabbed many rebounds, but St. Francis came up short at the end.

The SFDS Pee Wee Blue team beat St. Thomas More, 14-7, before losing to Our Lady of Grace, 22-12. Bryn Nagel scored 8 points against St. Thomas, while Kathryn Gibson tallied the same against OLG. Rory Kirk was outstanding on defense against St. Thomas and Justine Twomey also excelled against OLG.

The Novice girls won handily over St. Helen, as Taylor Vegh had many steals and scored many points. Mary Ellen Woods, Jenna Tipaldo, and Kayla Kilgallen also contributed to the scoring. Courtney Blum and Kim Sluyk were the defensive stars.

Sunday's game against St. Margaret was tight throughout with St. Francis rallying to win, 23-21, as Erin Klein corralled an errant pass and scored the gamewinning basket. Emma Michaels and Kerri Rose Brennan spurred the rally with their outstanding overall play.

The Bantams won easily against St. Pancras as hard defense, fastbreaks and great passing produced the winning formula. Erin Nuszer scored 10 points, Ashley Raaf scored 8, and Paige Whelan and Deirdre Munday added 6 points each. The team would like to wish a speedy recovery to teammate D-Ray.

On the boys' side, the Intermediates beat St. Virgilius as Billy Buckley scored 14 points, Ryan Meade had 8, and Jared Lachner and Jonathan Maranga each had seven points.

The Bantams eased past a short handed Our Lady of Grace team as Eamonn Gavigan scored 10 points, Alex Moule dominated the paint, and Thomas Clark excelled at the passing game.

The Pee Wee Blue beat St. Thomas More, with Matt DeCrescenzo scoring 8 points, Ryan Moran scoring 6, and Johnny O'Connor and Thomas Glynn each scoring 4 points. Joe Gallo, Chris Apice, Matt Erhard, and Brian Ostrander also scored for the Blue.

The Gold beat St. Thomas Apostle, 21-11. James Pisano, Ryan Olsen, and Mark Butigian scored key baskets. The Subnovice Blue and Gold played each other in a spirited contest. James McManus had 10 rebounds for the Gold and Jonathan Machado and Peter Tuffey led the offense.
