Payment Program for Overdue Water Bills
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is reminding residential account holders about the one-time opportunity the agency is offering to cancel late payment charges if customers settle their delinquent accounts.
The Payment Incentive Program (PIP) is currently being offered to more than 8,200 single-family homeowners with overdue accounts, prior to service termination. Under the program, the DEP is eliminating the late payment charges of eligible customers who agree to immediately pay their water bill in full.
Homeowners will have until the beginning of February to make payments under PIP. Those who do not will be scheduled for service termination.
In recognition of the current mortgage and foreclosure climate, DEP has created a Safety Net Referral Program for water and sewer customers. The Safety Net Referral Program draws on a network of existing City and not-for-profit programs including the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development's Center for NYC Neighborhoods, and Human Resource Administration's Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). Customers who qualify based on means, age, and/or debt ratio can access the network of citywide assistance programs by calling 311 or the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) customer service at 718-595-7000.
