St.Saviour High School Varsity Basketball Update

The St. Saviour High School Varsity basketball team heads into the Christmas break sporting an overall record of 6-1 and a league record 5-0.

The team's success can be attributed to an aggressive defense that makes their opponents work for every shot, and an unselfish offense, where the key is to hit the open player for a shot.

Coach Bob Atanasio, a Rockaway resident, and the team are looking forward to a well-deserved break as some of the key players are banged up and need the rest.

First, there is Kristin Binckes ,who suffered a sprained thumb during a hard fought defensive battle against Fontbonne Hall Academy, which St. Saviour won, 28-17.

Binckes was also sidelined for the Pandas next game against Stella Maris, which the Pandas won, 40-31.

In the next game, Danielle Lopez played with a sore back suffered during the Fontbonne victory and then Rosemary Burke limped around on a sprained ankle.

Having three of your starters hurting at the same time is difficult at best. But Coach Atanasio relied on his other 2 starters, Clare Kearney and Julia Morris, along with key contributions off the bench from Alyson Caiazzo, Melissa DeLaRosa and Stephanie Hvala, to fill in for the injured players.

The team will take some time off to enjoy the holidays and get healthy before heading back into the gym for practice. Then they will begin to prepare for the remainder of the season.
