St.Francis de Sales Christmas Basketball Tournament Begins

The St. Francis Christmas Tournament kicked off on Saturday, December 15, with a full slate of games at St. Francis gym.

Gate of Heaven opened play with a win over St. Adalbert in the Pee Wee Division. St. Margaret also advanced in the Pee Wee Division later in the day, with a win over Good Shepherd.

St. Francis Blue followed on Sunday, with a win over Nativity. In the Novice division, St. Francis beat Our Lady of Grace, and other first round winners were: St. Andrew over St. Thomas More; St. Adalbert over St. Rose; and Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament over Nativity.

St. Francis were victors in the Bantam Division, over St. Christopher. Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament beat St. Stans, in the second Bantam game.

In the Rookie Division, St. Joseph/St. Thomas won and they will face off against St. Francis in the next game.

St. Helen advanced to the winner's bracket finals, with a win over Good Shepherd. St. Thomas More led off the Intermediate division, with a win over Our Lady of Grace. Our Lady of the Angelus beat St. Virgilius, and St. Margaret beat Epiphany, to set up a matchup with St. Francis.

Subnovice Division play began last Monday night, as St. Francis Gold lost a heartbreaker to St. Helen.

That game was followed by the first thriller of the tournament. St. Francis Gold rallied from an 8-point deficit, as Alex Goldberg's buzzer beater from the corner forced overtime.

St. Francis rode that momentum to beat St. Margaret and advance to the winner's bracket final. St. Rose beat St. Thomas More in the Novice division to complete the night.

Attendance has been high at all the games, with the opportunity to catch teams from all around the metropolitan area, including Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island.

Play continued throughout the week and continues this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The tournament breaks for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; before resuming Wednesday December 26 and continuing through Championship Saturday on December 29.

Anticipated highlights before the championships include: the Pee Wee winner's bracket final on December 26 at 5:45 p.m., and the St. Francis-St. Andrew matchup in the Novice Division, on December 22 at 4:00 p.m.

The Bantam winner's bracket final takes place on December 23 at 6:30 p.m. A possible St. Francis-St. Helen matchup could take place in the Rookie division on December 26 at 9:00 p.m, which is the most heated rivalry in CYO.

The Intermediate winner's bracket final will occur on December 27 at 9:00 p.m. Along the way, there will be performances by the St. Francis Cheerleaders, raffles, lots of food and drink, and the seasonal music selections of Keith Andresen.

Tournament Director Marty Andresen has announced the schedule for the final day of basketball action on December 29.

The championship schedule is as follows: 10:00 a.m.- Subnovice; 11:30 a.m.-Pee Wee; 1:00 p.m.- Novice; 2:30 p.m.-Special Awards Ceremony; 3:00 p.m.-Bantam; 4:30 p.m.-Rookie; 6:00 p.m. Intermediate.
