FRHS In this week's Sunday Post, Parade section, there was a small article called EDUCATION, contributors: Lyric Wallwork Winik, David Wallechinsky and Kristen Vala. Quoting the article: " One in 10 High Schools gets an F. About 1700 high schools in the U.S. - one out of 10 - are "dropout factories," a new designation created by Johns Hopkins University researchers. It refers to schools where 60 percent or less of the students who enter as freshmen make it to senior year. Lack of funding is part of the problem: even though the dropout factories overwhelmingly are in the poorest communities, only about 25 percent receive federal assistance for lowincome schools that they should be getting. Letters umbrage that the Department of Education wants to change the name. "A rose is a rose by any name, is still a rose." Why not give Far Rockaway High School the federal funds that are due... correct the problem, not sugar coat it. Keep the name Far Rockaway High School alive!
