Smith Speaks From Albany
Commentary From The Desk Of Senator Malcolm Smith Minority Leader New York State Senate

MALCOM SMITH
Once a year around the holidays, I write a column where I try to give my constituents a first person account of what's been going on in my life as it relates to being a senator. It's an opportunity for me to put aside policy discussions and speak to you straight from the heart.

I wish every person I represent could walk in my shoes, if only for one day. I say that so you can experience how fulfilling it is to represent our community and work on its behalf. I know that may sound sappy and sentimental, but I mean every word of it.

I consider my years in the state senate to not only be the most professionally rewarding, but also the most personally gratifying. If you haven't figured it out yet - I love my job - getting up every day and fighting for Southeast Queens. This year, especially, I felt like we were able to set the agenda on those issues that working families care about most: affordable health care, quality education, and good-paying jobs. Rest assured, I will continue to fight for these issues on your behalf.

Much work remains to be done and 2008 will undoubtedly be a challenging year. But with your help and the spirit of cooperation, I feel we can accomplish anything.

With that said, I would like to take this last opportunity of the year to wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday season. I hope that this message finds everyone in your home healthy and prosperous.

Finally, let's enjoy this holiday season and show good will toward our neighbors and friends. As I crisscross the district and attend local events, I look forward to talking with as many constituents as possible. I hope you will be one of them. If you happen to see me out and about this December please come up and say "hello." I would also like to invite you to stop by my District Office to meet my staff. We are here to serve your needs.

Have a safe and blessed holiday.
