Xavier High Ends Banner Season With Turkey Win Over Fordham
The 2007 edition was played for the first time at the Aviator Sports Complex before a standing room only crowd on perfect day. Once again the game proved to be a classic. The entire first half was a defensive struggle, the teams heading to the lockers with a 0- 0 score. A23-yard run by senior Jimmy Kowalski opened the scoring for Xavier but the extra point was stopped. Fordham responded immediately, including the extra point to make it 7-6 Fordham Prep. And so the slugfest continued. Senior tailback Craig Scardpane forced a 17 yard run into the corner of the end zone to put the Knights back on top 14-7, after local native Seamus Kelly ran in the extra 2 points. In the fourth period Xavier found themselves with their backs to the wall with 3rd down on their own 12 yard line. Breezy Point's Kelly, looking for the critical first down, broke loose and ran for an 88 yard TD. Fordham fought back one more time with the clock running down to end the scoring at 20 -14 Xavier, for the Knights' second consecutive victory in the holiday classic.
Highlights of the game were covered throughout the evening by CBS, Fox, ABC and MSG. Coach Chris Stevens was named the New York Giants/MSG Coach of the week.
Xavier Football ends the 2007 season with a 10-1 record, the most wins in the school's 160-year history. Many of the Xavier football players will enjoy a short break before getting ready to defend their National High School Rugby title in the spring.
