At stake were bragging rights for an entire offseason. If the girls won there would be tongue-in-cheek questions such as, "Hey, mom!, How come you couldn't bend to stop that winning goal?" or "Hey dad, how come you were doubled-over at midfield when you could have had a break-away?" No, it would not be pretty for the parents. But the girls would also suffer some disparaging comments such as, "I told you that you spend too much time playing video games. Now get outside and run, and maybe you'll beat us next year." And many others that begin with the words "When I was your age....". There was a lot at stake! All of the scoring was confined to the first of the two 15-minute halves.
After giving Sean Shevlin (the girls' coach, who was playing with the girls) "the business" with her left arm - conveniently hidden from the view of referee Sean Cummins, her son, who was noticeably 'absent' on the whistle - she stole the ball and scored on a clean shot past Ciarra Flynn. It was a little too cold for a "Mia Hamm" type celebration, Maureen later claimed. Moments later Hannah Kirk evened the score guiding the ball by defender Rita Kirk, her mother, and slipping it past goalie Joanne Shevlin, who appeared stunned at the speed of the ball (It was later stated that if there were a ringing cell phone by the goalpost Joanne might have made the save). Just before the end of the half Sean Shevlin received a centering pass from Hannah Kirk and gave his wife, Joanne, an early anniversary present, one-timing it past her and giving the girls a 2-1 lead, which proved to be the final score.
Mairead Flynn, still pumped-up from a recent 'Police' concert took a head-long dive in the mud. Hannah Kirk was witnessed, on several occasions, kicking the ball into the area of the field defended by her mother, running after it and giving her mother "the business". The second half, while deprived of scoring was not without excitement. Sam Prevot made several saves on her father Matt, whose game seemed to be thrown-off by an earlier 'header'. Even Sam's mother, Joyce, joined in the excitement. After Coach Sean called a hand-ball on Joanne Dziuk (Sean Cummins seemed reluctant to call any penalties against his mother's team), in the penalty box, Ciarra Flynn lined-up for a penalty kick against goalie Joyce, who started sweating like Ted Striker, in "Airplane". But in an attempt to place the ball just inside the post Ciarra kicked the ball wide. Speaking of Ciarra, her and her mother, Mairead, engaged in some fierce one-on-one play. One can see where Ciarra gets her drive. Kudos must also be extended to Liz Mc- Mahon, who managed to play a nice game, while doubling as a photographer. It had to be tough deciding whether to kick the ball, or take a picture of it. This story would be incomplete without mentioning the ringers imported by the girls' team: Kennedy Kirk, Jack Mullally, Kelsey Flynn (1st grade) and Shannon Dziuk (2nd grade). These kids played tough, even stealing the ball from this author, on several occasions. They were witnessed literally running circles around some of the adults, one of whom could be heard muttering "you little stinker".
At the end of the game both teams demonstrated their sportsmanship by lining-up and shaking hands. Everyone then retired to "Lenny's Pizzeria" for some much needed replenishment and a few laughs.
