PBS Omitted A Piece Of History
Dear Editor,

The recent PBS TV presentation of "Treasures in the Harbor," although very well done, was somewhat of a letdown for me. Many months ago, I heard of PBS' plan to make a documentary of Gateway National Park within the New York/New Jersey area. At the time, I thought that the producers might be interested in the NC-4's first transatlantic flight out of the Rockaway Naval Air Station (now Riis Park). I contacted them via email, informing them of this forgotten, but major, piece of history. I never received a reply.

I can understand ignoring my email, because at the time, I figured that the film was to present the natural features of the Gateway park property only. But when I saw that the documentary included other national park facilities and their natural and historical significance, I found it hard to believe that of all the research that was obviously done in filming the piece, none of it ever revealed the 1919 flight from Rockaway. The omission of this historic feat makes the documentary incomplete.
