SJEH Offers Depression Screening,Workshops

Anxiety and depression can happen to anyone at any age and any time, especially around the holiday season, says Penny Chin, a spokesperson for St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway.

One way to seek help confidentially and at no cost, she says, is to get screened on National Depression Screening Days, which will be held on Monday, December 10, Tuesday, December 11, and Wednesday, December 12, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John's Community Mental Health Center. The Center is located at 521 Beach 20th Street, Far Rockaway, NY 11691.

The screening can help identify symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The screening consists of filling out a questionnaire and a brief confidential interview with a mental health professional to discuss the results of the screening. Referrals, if appropriate, will be given. Educational literature will also be available. More information about the screening may be obtained by calling the Center at 718- 869-8822. All information will be kept in the strictest confidence.

Each day the screenings are being offered, there will also be a free lecture at 12 noon on a mental health topic. The following topics will be presented:

Monday, December 10, Parent-Child Communication, presented by Deborah Alper, MA.

Tuesday, December 11, Substance Abuse and Mental Health, presented by Susan Scheier, LCSW

Wednesday, December 12, Taking Control of Your Anger, presented by Ben Grysman, MA.

The Center offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment services to residents of the Rockaway Peninsula. Their highly qualified and caring team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses provide treatment tailored to the needs of the individual. Modalities include: individual, family and group therapies; case management; medication therapy; psychological testing; and crisis intervention. The Center also offers services for family members, as well as bereavement and marital counseling. Special group services include treatment of phobias and depression, anxiety management, parenting, anger management and domestic violence.
