for larger version       Far Rock Boys Basketball Seek Higher Goals Mark Bacchus has looked at the PSAL website and how the Far Rockaway boys' basketball program has done in the standings the past few years. And for Bacchus to conclude to say that the Seahorses' 7 wins and 37 losses in the past three years combined isn't outstanding, might be just a tad of an understatement. But the outlook for the newly appointed head coach, who previously helmed the junior varsity team, is that the Seahorses' plethora of young talent should get them out of the PSAL Queens West A division cellar. And just maybe, his team has a chance to contend for a division title. "For the past few years, it's been a tradition of losing. And we're trying to turn that around," Bacchus said. Though the Seahorses started the season on a down note, losing 42-29 to Springfield Gardens last Wednesday, Bacchus says things will get better. "I'm trying to mold them into team players. We're going to learn the game of basketball, play as a team, win and lose as a team." The Seahorses will mix old and new as they try to push the ball up the floor and take advantage of their athleticism. Seniors Quincy Powers Jr. and Davonne Gittens will share the point guard duties. Splitting the duties at center should be 6-foot-6 Stafford Nichols', who provides a defensive presence in the paint and 6-foot-5 Chris Rainey. Most of the roster is made of underclassmen but freshman Marlon Johnson has a chance to make an impact this season. Already in the starting lineup, Bacchus says he was lucky that his 6- foot-4 small forward was in the school. "Marlon has a sweet shot, drive and is an excellent player and I think he can definitely be a top level Division I prospect," Bacchus said. But Johnson, like the rest of his younger teammates, showed their growing pains against Springfield Gardens. "Some of our kids got frustrated when they couldn't make a shot," Bacchus said. "We'll make the adjustments that we need to do."
If they can make the adjustments, and overcome a losing culture, then opponents will once again fear the team from "The Rock".
