But despite her love of the game, the Far Rockaway Lady Seahorses sophomore almost didn't suit up for the opening B-1 game against Queens High School of Teaching. Despite a lower back injury, the high flying Holland poured in 32 points but it wasn't enough as the visiting Tigers eked out a 43-38 road win last Tuesday afternoon. Holland led the team in scoring with 25 points per game last year but against QSHT, a recurring back injury hampered her effectiveness to start the game. QSHT used their size to hold the lead for most of the game. They held off a late fourth quarter charge in which the Seahorses cut an 11-point deficit to 37-35 with 4:00 left. But the Seahorses couldn't find an answer. Holland had trouble using her explosion and quickness to the basket as means to score on three consecutive tries to tie the game. Holland said the injury occurred last year and it flared up that afternoon. She decided to suit up prior to the 4:30 tipoff. "I had a messed up back. I have flat feet and everytime I jump; it (the pain) goes through to my spine. It hurts when I'm playing," Holland said. Holland said she will get specially made soles inserted into her sneakers so the pain will be alleviated each time she jumps and lands on her feet. But except for six points by forward Darnella Atkins, head coach Les Sabbah knows the Seahorses need to find a second scorer to alleviate the burden from Holland. "She's young and resilient," Sabbah said of Holland. "She said she didn't feel well and it contributed to our slow start. They look to her and they need her there." The Seahorses started strong with a 4-0 non-league record this year ,but they need to find a scorer to replace Sandy Jean Francois, a 6 foot 1 center and guard depth with the transfer of Schinequa and Schinique Anderson to Bishop Loughlin.
"We didn't play well but we did play hard at the end. We almost made it and we were hoping she (Holland) or someone else could help us pull through," Sabbah said.
