for larger version       Rockaway Trains Get Less Than Stellar Grades From Commuters The Metropolitan Transit Authority report card for the subway lines serving the Rockaways is out, and the results are not good. The "A" train, which includes the entire route from Far Rockaway to 207 Street in Manhattan, received an overall performance grade of C minus from 6,703 of its riders. The Rockaway Park Shuttle was less fortunate. It received an overall grade of D plus. In 21 categories, the shuttle received six B's, five B minuses, five C's and five C pluses from the 132 riders who responded to the survey. The top priorities for passengers included reasonable wait times for trains, minimal delays during trips, cleanliness of stations and subway cars and a sense of security in stations. Commuters were also concerned with the ability to hear on-train announcements as well as the availability of escalators and elevators in the stations. "A" train riders gave the line two B minuses, seven C's, five C minuses, two D's and five D minuses. "A" train passengers were concerned with the same issues as those who ride the shuttle. An additional concern on the "A" line was the crowded trains passengers experience during rush hour (which got the lowest single grade of D for specific problems on the line). In a letter to subway riders, which was posted with each report card on the MTA's website, the president of New York City Transit lays out for city residents what to expect in the future. "Employees responsible for each of the topics you rated have received your results," wrote Howard H. Roberts Jr. "Supervisors have been directed to coordinate, review and make recommendations. I will personally review these recommendations and set a date for implementation. You should see improvements, and to be sure, we will be back again next year with a 2008 Rider Report Card so you can let us know."
