Elected Silence
Dear Editor,

Two sayings often stated are, "all politics are local" and "silence is golden." Current headline news topics are often discussed among friends with varying viewpoints. That's how we get to know and understand where the folks we know are coming from. We get to know the different views of presidential hopefuls through the many media outlets. But rarely do we learn where our local politicians stand on these same issues; too often, our local politicians prefer to remain silent, leaving the U.S. in the dark as to where they stand.

A newspaper could provide a community a valuable service if it ran a weekly "Hot Issue" forum, polling our pols on where they stand on the latest weekly concern. It would be great to know where each of our elected officials stood on important issues, from driver's licenses to illegal aliens, congestion parking in the city, ferry service, beach hours to pool lanes, and more. There's a never-ending supply of issues for which a straight "yes" or "no" vote, or hopefully not, a "no response," from our local politicians could appear. An early reply, not an after-the-fact, "which way did the polls go," would surely give the voters some insight into those whom we elected to speak for us.
