for larger version       'Empty Bowls' Project in Brooklyn The Brooklyn Potters Group began its Empty Bowls Project in 1996 to raise consciousness of hunger in Brooklyn and to raise money for CHIPS, a Park Slope nondenominational food and shelter program. Michael Ayoub sponsored the Empty Bowls Project for the first few years at Cucina Restaurant and Allon Azulai now gives the Empty Bowls Project its second home at his Ozzie's Coffee III, on Fifth Avenue. Potters donate handmade soup-sized bowls for display at Ozzie's; customers who donate at least $25 to CHIPS, the Park Slope Soup Kitchen, take home a handmade bowl. On two occasions, potters from the Brooklyn Potters Group took the Empty Bowls Project into the New York City public schools. Students made and sold bowls to raise funds for neighborhood food programs. Since 1978, Brooklyn and tri-state clay artists have, through the Brooklyn Potters Group, gathered to share information, inspire one another and nourish a community presence.
Seventy-five members enrich studio isolation, hearing lectures by members or guest speakers, taking studio tours and workshops, sharing critiques, technical discussions and potluck meals. Local members include Susan Locke and Gene Nichol.
