Rockies Host Tournament

Last Saturday, the Rockaway Rockies ended another great season by coming together to play an entire day of hockey.

The morning began with the ever popular skills competition. The winners were: John Glynn (9 and over), Justin Curricato (8 and under) and Grace Collins (6 and under).

Breakaway winners were: Timmy Panetta (9 and up), Justin Curricato (8 and under) and James Byrnes (6 and under).

The Gold Team, after finishing the season with 2 wins, 6 losses and a tie, were the winners in the team relay by defeating a powerful Rockies Black team.

After lunchtime, the Rockies traveled to College Point, and took on the Stars, in their first road game in seven years.

The Rockies 8 and under team were the first to compete. Tim Collins scored the first goal for the Rockies and Alex Gugielski added two more. C.J. Gallagher was solid in net and kept the game close but the Rockies were on the losing end of a 7-3 score.

The Rockies though outshot College Point and the young men and women on the team showed how far they have come.

The second game kicked off immediately, following with the 9 and up team. Brian Ostrander scored two goals with Panetta and Mark Harnisher also scoring a goal each.

Brendan Burns was outstanding in net until an injury took him out of the game in the second period. Panetta stepped in and finished strong as the Rockies won 8-4. The team had a great performance which was highlighted by their great defense and speed.

The Rockie coaches would like to thank the College Point Stars for the invitation and hope to see them again in Rockaway. The team would like to thank the parents that drove and stayed outside in the cold while they cheered for hours.

The commissioner would like to thank Linda for providing coffee and donuts and a special thanks to James Curricato for refereeing all of the games.
