The girls' teams went 6-0 and the boys had a 3-0 record. The Third-Grade Girls played outstanding soccer against Our Lady of Hope, in one of the tightest contests. After a 0-0 score in regulation, SFDS scored three unanswered goals in overtime to bring them to the championship game. As usual, the "Fab Four" of Gavigan, McCool, Marten, and Kuhlmann were able to keep Hope from getting any type of momentum. Hope tried to create some offensive chances but it was hard to get the ball past Meghan Gigliello or Paulina Ruta, which made it easy for freezing goalkeeper Bridget Breslin to handle the ball only twice during the whole game. In overtime, the team dominated the field with speed. Megan Twomey gave a heads-up pass to Courtney McCool, who was able to blast the ball into the back of the net, breaking the tie.
Victoria Stagnitta dribbled the ball down the left wing and crossed a pass to Maria Di Carlo in the middle. The SFDS players solidified their lead with a second goal of the game, which made it tough for Hope to bounce back. Within 45 seconds of the second goal, Gwyn McGee was able to bring the ball from midfield, weave her way through Hope's team and get the ball to Di Carlo again. The young player then finished off the game with a hard shot past the Hope goalie for her second goal of the day. Tremendous plays by Rose Fay, Carli Bopp, Nicole Gibson, made it a little easier for SFDS to continue its winning streak. The Fifth-Grade Girls had another classic matchup with their rivals from St. Thomas More. Both teams have won the championship before.
The Fifth-Grade Boys (North) also had an overtime matchup against More that ended in a 2-2 tie. St. Thomas won the shootout, 5-3, to advance. Coaches Richie and Roy want to thank the boys for their great effort this season, in what was a tough year for the coaches and the team. The Sixth-Grade Boys won a 1-0 battle against Hope. Jeffery Lavin scored the winning goal off a beautiful pass by James Amadeo 12 minutes into the match. The team has gelled into a dominating force, both offensively and defensively, behind the outstanding play of goalie Dylan Evans. The Sixth-Grade team finished their season undefeated at home and now must go on the road for the division championship against St. Thomas More. The Eighth-Grade Girls rallied from a 1-0 deficit to knock off defending champion St. Francis of Assisi. The opposition had staked itself to a 1-0 lead early, but de Sales rallied to tie then notched the game winner with two minutes remaining. The Eighth-Grade Boys remained undefeated with a 2-0 victory against Our Lady of Hope. Both of the St. Francis' Fourth- Grade Girls' teams were victorious, setting up the second all-SFDS championship in three years. The Blue team defeated St. Gregory's, 3-0. The Gold team topped Hope, 3-1.
The Seventh-Grade Girls hung on for a tense 2-1 victory against St. Gregory's.
