Workers were pumping concrete at the Beach 39 Street site when the accident happened. "A concrete pump boom hit the overhead wire," said Captain Brian McMahon, the commanding officer of the 101 Precinct, who responded to the scene of the accident on November 8. According to reports, the superintendent of the Metropolitan Construction Group told police that Antemio Blaus, 25, and Richardo Garcia, 26, were spreading cement that was being poured into a trench by the boom, which made contact with the live power line. Both workers were rendered unconscious by the powerful electrical charge moving through their bodies. One eyewitness told The Wave that the shoes worn by one of the men were blackened and knocked from his feet by the electrical charge.
Several two-family homes are currently under construction on the lot, on Beach Channel Drive, between Beach 39 and 40 Streets. A check on the Department of Building's website revealed that the property is owned by the city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). According to the DOB website, no violations were found when inspectors from that agency last visited the site on November 9.
Sources say that both of the men are expected to fully recover from their near-electrocution.
