Amanda won the title of Miss Jr. Teen NYC/Long Island for her Division, one of three divisions for young ladies between the ages of 10 and 19. The competition included modeling routines for casual and formal wear, along with personal interviewing skills. Personality was the number one aspect that each contestant was judged on during all phases of the competition. Amanda was chosen from more than 1000 girls in her age bracket to represent New York City, Long Island and surrounding communities at the Cities of America National Competition that will take place in Orlando, Florida. More than $60,000 in prizes and awards will be presented at the National Competition. Amanda's win will allow her to enjoy an expense- paid trip of 5 nights and 6 days in Orlando, Florida, while she competes on the national level. Amanda is hoping to win the overall competition, which will award a very large scholarship with which she dreams of pursuing a law degree from Harvard. Amanda has overcome many challenges in her efforts to compete. As a twin, Amanda was born prematurely. As a result, she was born with displaced hips, which impaired her ability to walk correctly until she was two years old. She was also born with a complicated case of "lazy eyes" and had to have two major surgeries on each eye to correct her vision. Without these surgeries, Amanda would have completely lost her eyesight.
Amada says that she recognizes that the love and support of all her family and friends has strengthened her in a way that makes her just as beautiful inside as she is on the outside. Her winning attitude and inner strength of character was obvious when she glided across the stage with her head held high. Amanda wanted all to know that if one puts their mind to a task, one can complete it, no matter what obstacles stand in the way.
