100 Pct Community Council Holds Monthly Meeting
Guest speaker, Gregory Springfield, president of the non-profit Team Thrust Auto Club, spoke to the community about collecting new or used toys for holiday distribution to children and other future community endeavors. According to Springfield, the Brooklyn based auto club would like to start community-based efforts here in Rockaway because many of the members have now relocated to the area. On December 8, they will be holding a toy drive, (location still to be determined). They will distribute the toys to kids in need throughout the entire peninsula. Drop-off points are at Kings Pharmacy and Shaggy Dog Inn, both located on Beach 116 Street. The toys can be used or new and don't need to be wrapped. "We are here to help out the community," Springfield said. "That is why we're here and that's what we will be doing."
In addition to Springfield and Barrett's remarks, several Beach Channel High School Law Enforcement Explorers were in attendance and were commended by Community Council President Danny Ruscillo for their volunteer efforts with the council and community, particularly with local graffiti cleanup.
Captain Barrett explained that The Law Enforcement Explorers are taught basic law enforcement skills in preparation for police officer careers later in life. It is a program that works in collaboration with the NYPD and is funded through the Boy Scouts of America.
